Adeline Fredin

It is with a profound sense of sadness that we report the passing of Ms. Adeline Fredin, past Director and Tribal Historic Preservation Officer (THPO), for the Colville Confederated Tribes. She was one of the first THPOs in the nation and developed a nationwide model for tribal historic preservation programs incorporating historic and archaeological protection efforts with a unique tribal perspective.

Adeline was a foundational figure in Washington archaeology and tribal relationships. As the Director and head of the tribe’s History and Archaeology Department she was a passionate advocate for the protection of cultural resources and the protection of archaeological sites.

Adeline was instrumental in the establishment of the tribe’s repository to house the collections from the Corps of Engineers Seattle District Chief Joseph Reservoir Archaeological Project in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

She will be sorely missed by all in the Pacific Northwest.
