ADVANCE NOTICE FOR HUD SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES GRANTS

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Deputy Secretary and former King County Executive Ron Sims, has announced an advance notice and request for comment on HUD's Sustainable Communities Planning Grant Program, part of Congress' $150 million Sustainable Communities Initiative. Of that package, $100 million is targeted for the Sustainable Communities Planning Grant program. Briefly, the grant program is described as providing seed money to regional efforts to develop plans and implement programs and incentives leading to more sustainable communities. Given the close link between historic preservation and sustainability, this program has clear implications for furthering preservation efforts on a regional basis. Comments about the program plus evaluation and implementation questions must be received by HUD by 9:00 pm P.S.T. on Friday March 12.
