AKCHO NAMES RECIPIENTS OF 2010 ANNUAL AWARDS

Seattle – The Association of King County Historical Organizations, a membership organization that includes King County historical museums, historical societies, ethnic heritage groups, and individuals working in the historic preservation and heritage fields, has named the recipients of its 2010 Annual Awards. The Awards recognize the contributions of AKCHO members and others who have performed outstanding services in preserving, interpreting, and presenting the history and heritage of King County in the previous year. The winners were honored in a ceremony at the Museum of History & Industry on Tuesday, April 27, 2010. The winners are: Charles Payton Award for Cultural Advocacy Michael Herschensohn Exhibit Award Kenmore History: An Interpretive Sign Project – Kenmore Heritage Society Heritage Education Award Patty Shelton, Bellevue School District Long-Term Project Award Duwamish Long House: Duwamish Tribe Single Impact Event Discovering A-Y-P: A Community Research Project – MOHAI Virginia Marie Folkins Award Peter Blecha for Sonic Boom: The History of NW Rock from “Louie Louie” to “Smells Like Teen Spirit” Willard Jue Memorial Award Loita and Dale Hawkinson – Kirkland Heritage Organization Youth Award Justin Bunch - Eastside Heritage Center The nominees were submitted by AKCHO members and reviewed by the AKCHO Awards Committee. In addition, 2009 award winners were asked to evaluate each nomination. Winners were selected based on an objective scoring system and confirmed by the Awards Committee. The April 27 ceremony included special recognition of several public agencies and private organizations and individuals for their contributions to the county-wide celebration of the 2009 centennial of the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition.
