Alston Thoms, Archaeologist 1948-2021
It is with great sadness that we recognize the sudden passing of Dr. Alston Thoms, Archaeologist at Texas A& M University. Alston conducted archaeology in Washington state and undertook the first systematic archaeological research on camas ovens and camas processing in the Kalispel Valley, Pend Oreille County. This research formed the basis of his PhD. Dissertation at Washington State University and is a standard reference work for the Pacific Northwest. He continued his research in Texas and is widely recognized for his commitment to Native American Heritage Protection and the mentoring of cultural resource management students..
