Bigelow House Museum in Olympia seeking docents

The Bigelow House museum in Olympia is looking for people with an interest in local or state history who would be able to give a few hours of their time on a Sunday  - just once a month or so - to walk visitors through the house and talk about early pioneers Daniel Bigelow and his wife Anne Elizabeth.  Both were very involved in Washington state’s early history.  Daniel was involved with early territorial government and held a number of other offices during this long career. Both he and his wife were supporters of public education, civil rights for non-whites, women’s suffrage and temperance.  The Bigelow family occupied the Carpenter Gothic house from 1860 through 2005, so it contains original family furnishings and artifacts. The house is open from 1 – 4 pm on Sundays all year and also open on Fridays during the spring and summer months. We also book special group tours upon request. We would like to have 2 docents on duty, so there is someone to greet newcomers while another tour is in progress.  The training consists of shadowing a few of the docents until the new docent feels comfortable leading a tour on his/her own.  There may be an opportunity for a “greeter”  role, someone who would  be stationed in the tour room. They would just need to know what is in that room and some general info about the exterior of the house and the grounds. Those interested in this opportunity should contact the docent coordinator at bigelowhousemuseum@gmail.com.
