CALL FOR PROPOSALS: FROM CIVIL WAR TO CIVIL RIGHTS

"From Civil War to Civil Rights" 64th Pacific Northwest History Conference

 The Washington State Historical Society, permanent sponsor of the Pacific Northwest History Conference, invites proposals for the 64th Pacific Northwest History Conference, October 19-20, 2012 at the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma, Washington. We seek sessions, panels and workshop proposals on the broad theme of the Civil War and Civil Rights in the Pacific Northwest. The Pacific Northwest History Conference is a unique forum for exchange among historians, museum professionals, educators, archivists, history enthusiasts, and community activists. Proposals from all quarters are strongly encouraged. The conference is an opportunity to share your work and passion with a community of like-minded people. The 64th conference commemorates the 150th anniversary of announcement of the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862 and the 50th anniversary of the landmark 1962 Supreme Court ruling ending segregation in all transportation facilities. Topics might include:
  • The Civil War in the Northwest
  •  Lincoln's influence in Northwest politics
  • Commemorations of the Civil War in the Northwest
  • Civil War figures and their relationship to the Northwest
  • Slavery and the Northwest
  • Black Exclusion Laws in the Northwest
  • Pathways to and from the Northwest during the Civil War
  • The Civil War and Nationalism
  • Memory in Civil War and Civil Rights Commemorations
  • Role of Civil War Veterans in the Northwest and the role of veterans in the Civil Rights movement in the Northwest
  • Civil Rights activists and issues in the Northwest
  • Civil Rights legislation
  • Civil War and Civil Rights biography

Submission Guidelines: 

Electronic submissions are required; attach proposals as Word or PDF (preferred) files. Submissions can involve an entire session or an individual presentation. All proposals must include: title, description (no more than 250 words), A/V requirements (laptop, projector, screen, etc.), presenter name, professional affiliation, address, email, phone number and brief resume. Session proposals must include all of the above for each presenter, plus: session title, session description (200 words maximum), and contact information for the panel organizer, including email address and phone number. We assume that everyone listed in a session proposal has agreed to participate. All presenters must register for the conference. Proposals must be submitted electronically by 5:00 p.m. on April 6, 2012. Applicants will be notified by May 11, 2012.
