COLLINS BUILDING SALVAGED LUMBER AND OTHER MATERIALS NOW AVAILABLE

The columns, beams and windows from the historic Collins Building are now available through an application process for qualifying entities. Per the mitigation strategy in place for deconstruction of the Collins Building, the salvage materials will be made available, at no cost, to public agencies and owners of buildings listed or eligible to be listed in a local, state or national register of historic places. Materials must be used for approved rehabilitation projects to historic properties. Public agencies, requesting less than 20 windows, do not need to meet the historic standard requirement. The material is being stored at a secured Port location for six months, and will be distributed as approved by the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation and Historic Everett. Applications will be reviewed and the material will be distributed in the order they are received. Qualifying entities must file a formal application with supporting documentation for the material request. Buildings that are eligible to be listed on a register, but are not currently listed, will be required to apply for listing as a term of the material receipt. Entities receiving the materials must enter into a use agreement with Washington Trust for Historic Preservation, and sign a hold harmless agreement with the Port. Materials that are not distributed through the application process will be sold through a competitive bid process to a reuse firm at the end of the six month period. The proceeds from the sale of the material will go toward the ongoing restoration of the Port’s historic Weyerhaeuser Building. In 2010, the Port invested more than $400,000 to restore the roof and interior of the building. The Collins Building, which was located off 13th Street and West Marine View Drive, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. The building was deconstructed in 2010 after a six month review process, in which the Port Commission ultimately determined that redeveloping the building would be cost prohibitive.
