DISCOVERY TRAIL DEDICATION SET FOR JUNE 5

  The City of Lakewood Parks & Recreation Department has announced a dedication ceremony for the Discovery Trail at Fort Steilacoom (formerly Waughop Lake) Park on Saturday June 5 at 11:00 am. The Park together with the adjacent Western State Hospital, comprise the Fort Steilacoom/Western State Hospital Historic District and recognizes the long-time use and habitation of this historically significant location. In addition to use by Native Americans, this site was also used by early settlers, the U.S. Military at Fort Steilacoom, and later establishment of the hospital by the State. The Discovery Trail includes interpretive signage about the Park including the historic barns used by Hospital staff and residents in the early 20th century as well as the foundations of what became known as the Hill Ward that is pictured on the invitation.
