Built in 1908 by the Danish Brotherhood in America, Lodge 29, it housed a large event room and  a balconied auditorium with a hardwood dance floor, along with rooms that provided housing for Danish  immigrants, and later on, for people from Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Brazil. During its first century, the three-story brick building’s gathering spaces hosted such civic leaders and performing artists as Martin Luther King Jr.,W.E.B. du Bois, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Mahalia Jackson, Lionel Hampton, Marian Anderson, Jimi Hendrix, Billie Holliday, and Mark Morris, and On the Boards. See the building, learn about our efforts to upgrade the facility with financial support from 4Culture and the Washington State Historical Society, and celebrate 100 years of arts and cultural uses.   Historic Seattle Second Annual Preservation Awards Ceremony What: Reception and Awards Honors with keynote speaker to be announced Where: Women’s University Club, 1105 Sixth Avenue at Spring Street When: Tuesday, May 11, 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm; formal program at 6:30 pm Register: $50 Historic Seattle members; $60 General Public; $25 students Includes appetizers and wine/beer In 2009, Historic Seattle celebrated its 35th Anniversary year, by introducing an awards ceremony that acknowledged community excellence in preserving and protecting built heritage. Albertson and Édouard Frère Champney and designated a Seattle City Landmark in 2008.
