NATIONAL PRESERVATION INSTITUTE TRAINING SESSIONS OFFERED IN SEATTLE

The National Preservation Institute, a nonprofit organization founded in 1980, educates those involved in the management, preservation, and stewardship of cultural heritage.  Section 106: Agreement Documents Seattle, WA — December 3-5, 2012 This advanced seminar focuses on memoranda of agreement and programmatic agreements under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. Learn how to survive and thrive during the agreement process through careful analysis, clear writing, and good negotiation. Review the available tools, guidelines, alternatives—and non-alternatives—to reach a favorable conclusion to the process. An agenda is available online at www.npi.org. Identification and Management of Traditional Cultural Places Seattle, WA — December 6-7, 2012 “Traditional cultural places” (TCPs) are important for the roles they play in community cultural traditions, beliefs, and activities. They must be considered in planning under the National Environmental Policy Act, the National Historic Preservation Act, Executive Orders 12898 and 13007, and other authorities. This seminar explores definitions and methods of identifying and managing impacts on TCPs. An agenda is available online at www.npi.org. Instructor. Claudia Nissley, president, Nissley Environmental Consultants; former director, Western Office, Advisory Council on Historic Preservation and Wyoming State Historic Preservation Officer; specialist in preservation issues relating to NHPA, NEPA, CERCLA, ARPA, and NAGPRA LA/CES. These seminars meet the criteria for programs in the American Society of Landscape Architects Continuing Education System and ASLA members will receive 6 learning units each day. Registration. Advanced registration is available until October 25 for $600 (3 days – 106 Agree) / $450 (2 days – TCPs) / $900 (5 days – both seminars). After that date, the regular registration rate is $650 (3 days – 106 Agree) / $500 (2 days – TCPs) / $950 (5 days – both seminars). Scholarships. A National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) grant for scholarships covers the cost of tuition for qualified applicants to attend NPI seminars in targeted cultural resource management areas.
