The National Preservation Institute, a nonprofit organization founded in 1980, educates those involved in the management, preservation, and stewardship of our cultural heritage. Advance registration rate available through September 15, 2011 in cooperation with the Oregon Department of Transportation and the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office Section 106: Agreement Documents Portland, OR — October 24-26, 2011 This advanced seminar focuses on memoranda of agreement and programmatic agreements under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. Learn how to survive and thrive during the agreement process through careful analysis, clear writing, and good negotiation. Review the available tools, guidelines, alternatives—and non-alternatives—to reach a favorable conclusion to the process. An agenda is available online at www.npi.org. Consultation and Protection of Native American Sacred Lands Portland, OR — October 27-28, 2011 Explore the consultation process mandated by federal laws as it pertains to Native American sacred lands. Review the guidelines from both tribal and federal land-managing agencies’ perspectives. Consider the legal, historical, and cultural factors that influence consulting parties. Discuss ways to use the consultation process in conjunction with other tools, such as land trusts, restrictive covenants, and property purchases by tribes or nonprofit conservancies, to achieve a protected status for culturally significant places. A National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) grant for scholarships covers the cost of tuition for qualified applicants to attend NPI seminars in targeted cultural resource management areas.
