NPI SECTION 106 REVIEW / NAGPRA & ARPA – March 5-8 – Seattle, WA

The National Preservation Institute, a nonprofit organization founded in 1980, educates those involved in the management, preservation, and stewardship of cultural heritage. Advance registration rate available through January 24, 2013 These seminars are being held in cooperation with Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture, University of Washington and the National Park Service, Pacific West Region Section 106: A Review for Experienced Practitioners Seattle, WA — March 5-6, 2013 Review regulations, standards, guidelines, and related laws relevant to Section 106 review. Discuss issues, problems, and “tricks of the trade,” with an emphasis on ways to employ creativity and flexibility to reduce complexity and improve effectiveness. This seminar is designed for the experienced practitioner of Section 106 review who needs a general update. An agenda is available online at www.npi.org. NAGPRA and ARPA: Applications and Requirements Seattle, WA — March 7-8, 2013 Review the historical context and intent of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA), and the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) as they relate to each other. Learn how these laws apply to the protection of federal and tribal lands and address issues of cultural heritage sites, districts, and landscapes. Examine differences in legal definitions, when and how regulations apply, and permit requirements. Discuss practical applications and effective strategies for developing agreements prior to ground-disturbing actions. An agenda is available online at www.npi.org. Instructor. The Section 106: A Review seminar meets the criteria for programs in the American Society of Landscape Architects Continuing Education System and ASLA members will receive 6 learning units each day.
