OWN AN HISTORIC LIGHTHOUSE!

Want to own a historic lighthouse? An opportunity is coming up that will put you in the running to take on the fun and challenges of preserving one of these treasured landmarks. The Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation recently received the Notification of Availability of the Point No Point Light Station near the Kitsap County community of Hansville. The Pt. No Point Light Station was established in 1879 and the present lighthouse and adjacent Keeper's Residence were constructed at the site by the year 1900. The station was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The transfer of ownership of the property from the U.S. Coast Guard to another entity is authorized by the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act (NHLPA) of 2000. This legislation provides for the transfer of historic light stations across the country from the Coast Guard to other government agencies, non-profit corporations, and community development organizations at no cost for the purposes of educational, cultural, historic preservation, or park and recreation uses. Since 2000, two historic Washington lighthouses have been transferred under the auspices of the NHLPA including the Grays Harbor Light to the South Beach Historical Society in Westport and West Point Light to the City of Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation. Transfer of title of historic lighthouses to new owners includes the attachment of a historic preservation covenant that requires preservation of the lighthouse according to the U.S. Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation. If interested in applying, eligible entities must submit a letter of interest the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) regional office in Auburn by December 15, 2009. Upon receipt of the letter of interest, eligible organizations will be sent an application form and the opportunity to inspect the property.
