Paid History Internship with Jacobs Engineering

History Intern

Jacobs is hiring a History Intern to assist with the archival documentation of original photographs of the Kittitas Division of the Yakima Project, which is operated and managed by the Kittitas Reclamation District (KRD).

Background:

The Kittitas Division irrigates approximately 59,000 acres in the Kittitas Valley. Construction of the Kittitas Division started in 1926 and was completed in 1933. Its design involved “more types and different forms of canal sections than any irrigation [system] yet constructed in this county and probably is one of the most expensive covering so large an acreage” when completed. U.S. Bureau of Reclamation photographers not only documented the construction of the Kittitas Division, but also non-irrigation system views of the Kittitas Valley from the Kittitas County Fair to Ellensburg’s Cooperative Creamery to Luther Harrell’s purebred Belgian horses.

Over 2,000 photographs were taken by these photographers from the 1920s-1930s in the Kittitas Valley. Since the 1930s, these photographs have remained in the basement of KRD until their discovery. The historic photographs are being scanned and will be made available to public via the internet or with institutions such as the Kittitas County Historical Museum.

The student intern will digitize approximately 2000 historic photographs and record them on a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet according to federal standards under supervision of a professional architectural historian. The student intern will work independently but will be supported by Jacobs and KRD through regular in-person meetings and teleconferences.

Location:

The internship will be partially or fully located in Ellensburg, Washington. If the selected intern is not an Ellensburg resident, it is possible to do some work out of the Jacobs office in Seattle, but some time in Ellensburg is required. Travel reimbursement is available.

Duration:

Up to 250 hours in summer and/or fall 2019.

Compensation: $15 per hour.

Qualifications:
Must be enrolled in a Master’s or Bachelor’s Degree Program in History, Anthropology, Museum Studies, or related field.
Understanding of special requirements related to the handling of old photographs is preferred.
Familiarity with all Microsoft Office programs, particularly Excel.
Highly organized, independent worker, and keen attention to detail.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Familiarity with the Kittitas Valley is preferred.
