Plan To Attend These Exciting Fall 2013 Arts & Crafts Lectures At Good Shepherd Center

Inside and Out of the Arts & Crafts Home Supported by Civic Partners Fund, Seattle Office of Arts & Culture Co-sponsored by Seattle Design Festival Design in Public Sustained Support by 4Culture Historic Seattle’s Inside and Out of the Arts & Crafts Home is one of the kickoff events for The Seattle Design Festival, which invites design experts, city leaders, and citizens to learn about and celebrate all the ways that design improves our lives. (For complete program description go to SeattleDesignFestival.org.) Well before people talked about healthy buildings, LEED, and sustainability, the Arts & Crafts Movement in America was leading the way in the development of housing that aspired to provide for the health and well being of its owners. The Craftsman bungalow became the force that would impact thousands of streetcar neighborhoods—built of brick, stone, and Douglas fir, with its natural relationship of indoor and outdoor spaces, open floor plans, built-in furniture, efficient technology in kitchen and bath, and a welcoming hearth as the center of the home. Designs stimulated less stressful lives, simplified cleaning and upkeep to free women to explore their interests, and assured that time was set aside for family once one entered its doors from the working world. Two lecturers present newly emerging research into the manufacturing process of Gustav Stickley’s furniture workshop and the prolific work of regional Arts & Crafts period architect E.E. Green. A third presentation guides homeowners through the process of understanding color and color placement for the exterior of an Arts & Crafts house. Lectures are held at The Chapel Space in Good Shepherd Center. Fees include three lectures and refreshments.
