RECLAMATION: NEW CCC LEGACY BOOK AVAILABLE ONLINE

The Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (DAHP) is in receipt of a new publication by the U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Reclamation entitled The Bureau of Reclamation's Civilian Conservation Corps Legacy: 1933-1942. While most of us associate the Depression era CCC with Rustic Style picnic shelters, campgrounds and ranger stations in our National Forests and Parks, this book demonstrates that the CCC also played a major role in constructing federal irrigation projects in the western United States. This hefty publication written by the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) Historian Christine Pfaff, features text, charts, and maps describing the many CCC camps sponsored by the BOR across the west during the depression years. There are also forms identifying each camp in more detail. Best of all are the many historic photographs of camp life and Corps members working on projects. The book lists six BOR CCC camps in Washington State, most in Kittitas and Yakima Counties and one in Lincoln County near Coulee Dam. The book can be viewed or downloaded here.
