SEATTLE’S AWV: LOVE IT OR HATE IT, ENJOY HAER’S PHOTO DOCUMENTATION

The Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) of the Library of Congress has posted the recently completed photo documentation of the Alaskan Way Viaduct (AWV) along the Seattle waterfront. The entire collection with photos by noted architectural photographer Jet Lowe and associated text by Seattle historian Mimi Sheridan can be viewed by logging onto Check it out at the Library website. Also, be on the lookout for the most recent issue (winter 2010) of the National Park Service’s glossy periodical Common Ground. This issue features a selection of Lowe’s AWV photos accompanied by an interesting article written by Joe Flanagan. The article on the AWV (together with an article about the Blue Ridge Parkway) is apparently the first in a series of issues focusing on the nation’s historic infrastructure. The winter 2010 issue is not yet posted on the Common Ground webpage, but keep checking.
