Seattle City Light Intern Opportunity

Seattle City Light, a department of the City of Seattle, is one of the nation's largest municipally owned utilities in terms of the number of customers served. Over the years we have worked very hard to keep Seattle's electricity affordable, reliable, and environmentally sound. Today, City Light is a recognized national leader in energy efficiency and environmental stewardship. The Environmental Affairs and Real Estate Division is seeking a Historic Preservation Intern to assist with projects related to several of City Light's historic resources, among them the Georgetown Steam Plant (National and Seattle Historic Landmark), the Skagit River and Cedar Falls hydroelectric projects (listed on the National Register of Historic Places), and Seattle resources such as substations. Projects will range from populating an artifacts database to compiling a comprehensive historic context for City Light resources within our service area, following The Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Identification. This position will report to the Manager of Natural Resources and Environmental Planning. Educational Benefit: This year-long internship will benefit the student by providing immersion into the field of historic preservation and providing them with a deep understanding of the profession's standards. Specifically, the intern will leave this internship with the following learning outcomes:
  • Ability to conduct extensive archival research and write historic contexts for several and/or single historic resources;
  • Manage and/or guide the treatment of historic resources;
  • Ability to conduct HP field work for survey forms and reports to a level suitable for submission to State and Federal agencies.
