SEE THE WORLD IN SOUTHEAST SEATTLE

Southeast Seattle – the area west of I-5 and south of I-90, including Beacon Hill, Mount Baker, Rainier Valley, Seward Park and Rainier Beach – is well known for its cultural diversity.  The recently completed Southeast Seattle Community History Project, sponsored by the Seattle Historic Preservation Program, generated new research on the post-World War II history of this area, and results are available here. Essays and reports contributed by community museums and local historians highlight geographic and social themes, and a series of posters incorporate historic and contemporary photos of the people and places that make Southeast Seattle unique.  Posters include text in English along with Chinese, Somali, Spanish or Vietnamese, in an effort to reach out to some of the 50+ language communities in Southeast Seattle. A free all-ages public event celebrating the project is set for Friday June 1st at 5:30pm at the Royal Esquire Club, at 5016 Rainier Avenue South in the Columbia City Historic District, near Columbia City Light Rail.  For more information, visit the project web site listed above or contact project manager Holly Taylor at holly@pastforwardnw.com.
