Spokane Preservation Advocates Old House Workshop Series - Small Houses, Big Changes!

SPA's 2016 Old House Workshop Series will be held on three consecutive Tuesdays in February: the 9th, 16th, and 23rd. This year the theme will be: Small Houses, Big Changes! The workshops will be held at Hutton Elementary School’s multi-purpose room, 908 E 24th Avenue, Spokane, from 6:00pm to 8:30pm. February 9: Workshop I - Dr. Mark Anderson, Associate Superintendent of Spokane Public Schools, and Greg Forsyth, Director, Capital Projects and Planning, will introduce the series and give a brief history of Hutton Elementary. At 5:30pm, prior to the start of the workshop, they will lead a tour of the school. Next will be Spokane City/County Historic Preservation Officer, Megan Duvall introducing the series with an overview of the Small House topic. The workshop's showcase presentation will be Architects Ron Wells, Ron Wendle, and Daniel Lazarek of Wells and Company. They will discuss with photos and stories, two projects in Vinegar Flats: an early roadside motel they transformed into small apartments and a small house design rehab. Q & A will wrap up the evening! February 16: Workshop II will focus on Peaceful Valley small homes including the Franz Pietsch House and others. The history of the neighborhood will be discussed. Speakers will include: Linda Yeomans, Preservation Consultant, and Brian Westmoreland, of Authentic Restoration Services Inc. Q & A will close the night! February 23: Workshop III will highlight three small house examples (1916, 1933 & 1940) with before-and-after pictures and details of rehab projects. Q & A to follow presentations. What's in store for future OHW will wrap-up the series! Tickets: $20 per workshop / $50 for the series.
