UPCOMING "SECOND SUNDAY" EVENT AT CATHLAPOTLE PLANKHOUSE

Join us at the Cathlapotle Plankhouse on the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge on July 8 at 2pm for our next Second Sunday event featuring herbalist and educator Judy BlueHorse Skelton. Judy BlueHorse Skelton (Nez Perce/Cherokee), MA, has worked with federal and state Indian Education programs throughout the Northwest for 18 years, creating cultural activities focusing on traditional and contemporary uses of native plants for food, medicine, ceremony, and healthy lifeways.  Judy is author of six collections of essays for teachers, including Native America: A Sustainable Culture (1999), and Lewis & Clark Through Native American Eyes (2003); she wrote and recorded 24 segments on Health & Healing and Sacred Landscapes for Wisdom of the Elders radio programs, airing on Public Broadcasting and AIROS (American Indian Radio on Satellite).  Judy wrote Ancient Futures, an essay for the new edition of Wild in the City, published 2011, and is a faculty member at Portland State University, where she teaches Environmental Education Through Native American Lenses, Learning Gardens & Civic Affairs and Leadership for Sustainability. During her presentation, Skelton will explore with visitors the medicinal uses of local native plants used by Native American communities along the Lower Columbia River.  If time and weather permits, a walk on the local Oaks to Wetlands Trail may be included to further discuss the traditional uses of plants.  Docent led tours of the Plankhouse and children’s activities will be available form 12-4pm.
