UW PUTS HOLD ON DEMOLITION OF MODERNIST NUCLEAR REACTOR BUILDING

University of Washington project planners have withdrawn their demolition application for the 1961 More Hall Annex building, better known as the Nuclear Rector Building. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2009 as the result of efforts by architecture student Abby Martin, the building’s proposed demolition by the university sparked a number of advocacy efforts to publicize its historic and architectural significance. The demolition proposal also resulted in More Hall being listed in the Washington Trust’s Most Endangered Historic Properties List. The decision to withdraw the demolition application is a dramatic reversal in UW’s campus facility planning process which envisioned the site to be cleared of the bold modernist design.
