VANCOUVER BARRACKS PRESERVATION FEATURED IN NATIONAL PARKS TRAVELER

The August 10, 2012 edition of the National Parks Traveler blog leads with a nicely illustrated article about expansion of the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site to include the buildings and acreage of the East and South Vancouver Barracks.  The article may be viewed here. The formal transfer of these parcels to National Park Service from the U.S. Army was made at a ceremony on May 28 capping a proud U.S. military presence in Vancouver since 1849. Now that the transfer of the 33 acres and numerous historic buildings of Vancouver Barracks has been transferred to their jurisdiction, the NPS is embarking on an ambitious long-term plan to rehabilitate and interpret the historic property. The article focuses on work planned and already underway to preserve the buildings. Although the article does not mention him, Fort Vancouver cultural resources staff credits DAHP’s Historical Architect Nicholas Vann as providing valuable guidance and direction in applying appropriate preservation and rehabilitation measures.
