Railroads have played crucial roles in regional history. Russell Holter, preservation design reviewer and coauthor of Rails to Paradise: The History of the Tacoma Eastern Railroad (1890-1919), has researched Washington railroads and their crashes. Some accidents proved to be comical in nature, while many others were tragic. In this power point presentation Russell will present the dramatic stories of several railroad wrecks. One of the featured accidents will be the infamous March 13, 1959 crash of a runaway, crewless train that resulted in many casualties and destroyed half a city block in downtown Olympia. This public program is part of the Noon-Time Lecture Series at the State Capital Museum. Suggested donation to each presentation is $2. You are welcome to bring lunch.
