WILLIAM J. HAWKINS III FAIA INTERNSHIP

HISTORIC RESEARCH/ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY CONTENT DEVELOPMENT WINTER 2012

The Bosco-Milligan Foundation/Architectural Heritage Center has established a named internship in honor of Portland architect William J. Hawkins III, FAIA and his exemplary contributions to local historic preservation. The internship is funded with contributions from colleagues, clients, family, and friends with the hope of encouraging the next generation of historic preservationists to be inspired by Bill’s example to pursue a career in the field.

Internship tasks have been selected to represent aspects of the honoree’s vocational accomplishments and avocational interests related to historic preservation and Portland history. The Winter 2012 Hawkins Intern will

perform historical research on Portland area architecture, landscapes, and neighborhoods

photograph Portland area buildings as necessary

create and upload content, including text and images, based upon historic research to the smartphone application TagWhat; and

other tasks as assigned and as time allows

Compensation: $1000 stipend. The internship may also apply to academic credit for some candidates. The intern will be expected to create content for approximately 150 buildings and/or sites that have already been identified. No housing is available. Job Specific Requirements: The successful candidate will have a demonstrated interest in and knowledge of Portland area history, architectural history, and/or historic preservation and will preferably have a graduate degree or commensurate experience in history, architectural history, public history, historic preservation, or a related discipline. Excellent research and writing skills are required, as is a basic understanding of smartphone applications and the ability to work with and to learn the specifics of TagWhat. Qualified candidates will be organized, analytical, attentive to detail, creative thinkers, able to work independently and as part of a team, must be comfortable working with new technology, and have strong written and verbal communication skills. Work Schedule: Hours are flexible and based on the time frame available to the successful applicant but will be primarily carried out during regular AHC weekday hours of operation (Tuesday through Friday). Tasks are to begin in January 2012 and are expected to be completed no later than March 31, 2012 but may be completed prior to that date.
