Charles Mutschler, 1956-2019

DAHP regretfully notes the passing of Charles V. Mutschler of Cheney, killed in a tragic car accident this past Saturday evening near Cheney. Mutschler was a long-time resident of Cheney and Eastern Washington University (EWU) staff Archivist and recently named interim Dean of the University's library system. He was also a very active and long-time member and current Chair of the Cheney Historic Preservation Commission (HPC). Many in the historic preservation community know of Charles as an avid railroad historian, author, and advocate. During his time on the Cheney HPC, Mutschler was involved in the saving and moving of the historic Moorman House to avoid demolition. More recently, he has been in a leadership role in a community-wide effort to save and move the 1929 Northern Pacific Railroad depot in downtown Cheney, again to avoid demolition of this local landmark. Our condolences to the EWU, Cheney, and preservation communities for this loss.
