DAHP's Susan Goff Recognized as Lacey's Historian of the Year

Susan Goff with her award State Historic Preservation Officer Allyson Brooks and staff at the Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (DAHP) are proud to announce that colleague Susan Goff has been recognized by the City of Lacey as “Historian of the Year.” She was nominated by the City’s Historic Preservation Commission and received her award as part of the City Council’s June 13 session. Her brief but very meaningful acceptance speech is reprinted here: I want thank you for honoring me with this award.  I particularly want to acknowledge the support of my husband. Over the years I have received encouragement to focus on local history with many projects.  But it is the memories I have that are the true reward.  For example, meeting Elizabeth Ayer to talk with her about her grandfather, Ike Ellis. Local history needs support of the community – individuals, historical society, schools, and the city council.  The latter is evident with the upcoming Proclamation for Lacey History Month. I would like to close with a quote written by Alice Cary Roripaugh in 1916: In the study of local history lies one means of cultivating appreciation of perseverance and nobility, and of awakening sincere love for the niche of the world we occupy, and incidentally for our whole great land. Susan works as DAHP’s Cemetery Database Cartographer and in this capacity has designed and maintains the State’s GIS database of cemeteries and burials. Besides her love of local history, Susan has multiple skills, talents, and interests including researcher, historic preservation advocacy, building rehab, architectural history, historical re-enactor, archivist, conservationist, organic farmer, writer, civic activist, garage sale junkie, and much more! Congratulations Susan for on this richly deserved recognition!
