Jefferson County Historical Society First Friday Lecture on May 3 in Port Townsend

Bruce Davies will be the guest speaker at the Jefferson County Historical Society's First Friday lecture this Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. He will be telling "Secrets of Craigdarroch Castle" with a video tour of the legendary Victorian mansion in Victoria, B.C. where he is the curator. Davies will tell stories of the 20,000 square foot, 39-room mansion built for Robert Dunsmuir between 1887 and 1890.  He was a Scottish immigrant who made his fortune from Vancouver Island coal and was the richest man in Western Canada at the time.  The Dunsmuir family fortune is reflected in the four floors of exquisite stained glass windows, intricate woodwork, and Victorian era furnishings.   Bruce Davies has spent most of his life working at Craigdarroch Castle.  He has been an employee of the historic site since 1975.  He holds a diploma in Cultural Resource Management from the University of Victoria and has been active in the Financial Development Association of Vancouver Island, Tourism Victoria, the B.C. Museums Association, and is currently director of Music By The Sea, a non-profit international music festival and mentorship program.   For a preview of the building, visit http://www.thecastle.ca/. The program will begin at 7:00 p.m. in Port Townsend’s historic city council chamber.  Admission is by donation which supports historical society programs.
