BLAINE CITY COUNCIL TO MEET TONIGHT ON FUTURE OF TRAIN DEPOT

The Blaine City Council meets tonight to decide if it is willing to guarantee maintenance of the historic Blaine train depot if it is moved to nearby Port of Bellingham owned property from its current trackside location. The Blaine Coalition for Historic Preservation, led by local preservationist Richard Sturgill proposes to rehabilitate the building as local museum and visitors center at the waterfront Plove Park. The Port does not want to see the building abandoned at Plover Park if rehabilitation efforts stall because of the slow economy. Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF), current owner of the building and land, plans to remove the depot for track expansion near the international border. Blaine City Council meets tonight at 7:00 pm at City Hall, 344 H Street. See the meeting agenda here.
