IN MEMORIAM: ED CLAPLANHOO, MAKAH TRIBAL ELDER

Ed Claplanhoo Makah Tribal Elder and Leader 1929 – 2010 It is with great sadness that we learned of Ed Claplanhoo’s passing this week. The Makah Tribal Elder and Leader was instrumental in the Makah’s efforts to construct the Makah Museum to house the archaeological artifacts from the Ozette archaeological site that was famous for the preservation of a wide range of perishable artifacts of the Makah. Ed had also served as Tribal Chair of the Makah Tribe, was also past Chair and Board Member of the United Indians of All Tribes Foundation based in Seattle, and was key in the recent creation of the Makah Veterans Monument and Spanish Fort Nunez Gaona- Diah Veteran Park on the Makah Reservation.
A funeral service is set for this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the Neah Bay High School Gymnasium followed by a dinner. Burial will take place sometime next week at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent.
