What are the economic benefits of historic preservation? As part of its Historic Preservation Plan and Policy update project, the City of Tacoma is hosting a free presentation on economic and sustainability considerations in historic preservation. Community members, professionals and students are invited to attend. The event will feature Donovan Rypkema, one of the leading national figures in the field of historic preservation, economic revitalization and real estate market analysis. Mr. Rypkema is the principal of the Washington, DC-based consulting firm PlaceEconomics which specializes in downtown and neighborhood commercial district revitalization and the reuse of historic structures. He is the author of several publications, including The Economics of Historic Preservation. Mr. Rypkema’s presentation will focus on the importance of linking historic preservation strategies with community-wide goals for sustainability and economic development. This discussion will help set the stage for updated goals and policies that will be part of Tacoma’s new Historic Preservation Plan, which is currently under development.
