MCLANE COVE (STADIUM) SCHOOL HOUSE AND TEACHER’S CABIN OFFERED FOR RELOCATION OR SALVAGE (UPDATED INFO)

The fate of two historic Mason County's buildings hangs in the balance. The old McLane Cove (a.k.a. Stadium) schoolhouse (1911-18) and accompanying teacher's cottage near the beautiful hamlet of Grapeview need to be relocated or salvaged. The school and cottage stands on private property, and the present owners plan to redevelop the land for a new dwelling, but they also wish to do whatever is possible to save these historic structures. Ideally a party would come forward that wanted to relocate one or both buildings, which are said to be in good, but modified, condition. The other option would be to dismantle the buildings with an eye to reusing the construction materials. The McLane School is mentioned in a history of the Grapeview School District #54 in the publication, GRAPEVIEW THE DETROIT OF THE WEST, 1872-1923, by Mary Sagerson and Duane Robinson, available through the Mason County Historical Society in Shelton.

The School House is 1,833 sq. ft.; the cottage is 535.5 sq. feet.  There is a front porch and raised deck on the school house, which add another 104 sq. ft. to it, making it 1937 sq. ft.

For additional information on the buildings, DAHP was just sent this document: History Old McLane-Stadium School1. Anyone interested in the relocation or salvage of these historic buildings is requested to contact Edward Johnson edward.johnson@cjenterprise.net for details.
