NPS to Transfer all National Register Files to the National Archives and Records Administration

The National Park Service will be relocating all of the original paper "legacy" records that form the nation's National Register and National Historic Landmark Collection as it has evolved from 1966 to 2012. These records will be transferred from their current, leased storage facility in Washington, DC to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) Federal Records Center in Fort Worth, Texas. Once relocated, the records will be stored by NARA in perpetuity in accordance with Federal archival standards and conditions. The transferred records will include all materials in a given NR or NHL file --- copies of the texts for all nominations and determination of eligibility files, original copies of all related photographs, maps, and correspondence related to each property listed prior to December 31, 2012. There will be a "blackout" period from August 19 through October 3, 2014 while the files are being transferred, however, most records are available digitally from the NPS.
